Create clean STL thumbnails for catalogs, RFQs, and documentation with one-click download.

3D thumbnail & render generator

Generate a thumbnail image from an STL or OBJ — free, in your browser

Upload an STL or OBJ model and iamRapid renders it in a framed 3D scene so you can capture a clean PNG thumbnail for product catalogs, RFQs and quotation documents, e-commerce listings, slicer libraries and project portfolios. Choose the output resolution, background (transparent, white, dark or brand coral) and model colour, rotate the part to frame it, then download a crisp square PNG. Everything runs locally in your browser — no upload, no account, and your model never leaves your device.

Current support: STL (binary & ASCII) and OBJ. For STEP, IGES, 3MF or other CAD formats, convert the file to STL first.

How to generate a thumbnail image from an STL or OBJ

A 3D thumbnail is a flat preview image — usually a square PNG — rendered from a 3D model so people can recognise the part without opening it in CAD or a slicer. iamRapid's free thumbnail generator renders your uploaded STL or OBJ in a framed 3D scene right in the browser, then captures exactly what you see as a high-resolution PNG you can download. There is nothing to install, no account, and your model never leaves your device.

  1. Upload your file to the tool above (STL binary or ASCII, or OBJ). It is read locally in your browser.
  2. Frame the model — the part is auto-centred and fitted to the scene. Drag to orbit, or click Rotate to frame for a clean three-quarter angle.
  3. Choose your output — pick a resolution (256, 512, 1024 or 2048 px square), a background (transparent, white, dark or brand coral) and a model colour.
  4. Download the PNG — click Download PNG to save the thumbnail at your chosen resolution, ready for catalogs, RFQs, listings or documentation.

This is the fastest way to make a preview image of an STL without learning Blender, Meshmixer, Fusion 360 or a slicer screenshot workflow.

What is a 3D thumbnail and why does resolution matter?

A 3D thumbnail captures one rendered view of a mesh as a 2D image. The right resolution depends on where the image will be used: 256 px is enough for a slicer or file-manager icon, 512 px suits inline catalog and table rows, 1024 px works well for product cards and listings, and 2048 px gives a crisp image for hero banners, print and retina displays. Because the thumbnail is rendered fresh at your chosen size, larger resolutions stay sharp instead of being upscaled from a small capture.

A transparent background (alpha PNG) lets the part sit cleanly on any page colour or product card, while a solid white, dark or brand-coral background gives a consistent look across a catalog. The model colour is purely visual — it does not change the geometry, only how the preview looks.
