How to generate a thumbnail image from an STL or OBJ

What is a 3D thumbnail and why does resolution matter?

A 3D thumbnail captures one rendered view of a mesh as a 2D image. The right resolution depends on where the image will be used: 256 px is enough for a slicer or file-manager icon, 512 px suits inline catalog and table rows, 1024 px works well for product cards and listings, and 2048 px gives a crisp image for hero banners, print and retina displays. Because the thumbnail is rendered fresh at your chosen size, larger resolutions stay sharp instead of being upscaled from a small capture.

A transparent background (alpha PNG) lets the part sit cleanly on any page colour or product card, while a solid white, dark or brand-coral background gives a consistent look across a catalog. The model colour is purely visual — it does not change the geometry, only how the preview looks.
