Ideation Sketches
CAD Modelling
After finalizing the design direction through ideation, the
selected concept for Luxo was developed into a detailed 3D CAD
model. This phase allowed us to refine its form, proportions, and
structural integrity, ensuring the torch module met both
functional and aesthetic requirements.
During the CAD modeling phase, the design was also optimized for
3D printing, ensuring that the main module could be printed
without the need for supports. This approach enhances
manufacturing efficiency, reduces material waste, and maintains
the clean geometry of the design.
The insights gained from CAD modeling and simulation enabled us to
move forward with manufacturing, ensuring a perfect balance
between strength, adaptability, and design aesthetics. This
meticulous approach guarantees a torch module that is both
visually commanding and structurally robust, ready for real-world
use in the toughest environments.
With the CAD model and simulation analysis complete, the next step
was to optimize the design for Additive Manufacturing (AM). This
phase focused on refining the geometry to ensure efficient,
high-quality 3D printing while maintaining the structural
integrity of Luxo. The chosen manufacturing process was Fused
Deposition Modeling (FDM) using PLA+ with 100% infill to achieve
maximum strength and durability.
Key considerations included:
Designing the main module to be printed without supports,
ensuring a clean finish and reducing post-processing time.
Minimizing material usage while maintaining structural
integrity for a balance between strength and efficiency.
Optimizing part orientation for better print quality and
dimensional accuracy.
Enhancing structural features to improve impact resistance and
durability in demanding environments.
By applying Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) principles,
we ensured that Luxo was fully optimized for FDM printing,
leveraging the benefits of additive manufacturing to create a
product that is both visually striking and functionally robust.
This step laid the foundation for a seamless transition to
prototyping and final production.
With Luxo designed for efficient support-free 3D printing,
post-processing is minimal, ensuring a clean finish and quick
assembly. Once the components are printed using FDM with PLA+ at
100% infill, the following steps are carried out:
Post-Processing
Surface Finishing: Since no supports were used, the printed
parts require minimal sanding to smooth out layer lines and
sharp edges.
Cleaning & Inspection: Each component is checked for
dimensional accuracy and any minor imperfections are
corrected.
Optional Finishing: Depending on the final aesthetic
requirements, additional steps such as painting or protective
coating can be applied.
Assembly
Top Attachment: Swaps easily by unscrewing a single screw,
allowing users to customize their lighting setup.
Battery Adapter: Securely fastens to the main module using two
screws, ensuring a firm and reliable power connection.
Rocker Button: Designed with a snap-fit mechanism, allowing it
to be easily pressed into place without the need for
additional fasteners.
This streamlined post-processing and assembly approach ensures
